These fritters are inspired by the Indonesian "bakwan" or "perkedel", which are often made with corn, but also with lots of other veggies! We even added some sambal to spice things up. The fritters can be enjoyed for lunch or as a snack, and are perfect to take with you on the go!

Hello, is t also possible to bake them in the oven instead of frying?

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 28, 2025, 1:25 p.m.

Hey Gerrit, we haven't tried it but imagine you can bake them instead of frying, although they'll be less crispy. For example, you can try baking at 200°C (400°F) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and firm. Lightly brushing them with oil can help with crispiness. Let us know how they turn out 🤗

We loved them and the leftovers stored very well in the fridge and where still really good when reheated!

Vanessa Alexandra - Dec. 10, 2024, 11:27 p.m.

I forgot to add the salt to these and they were STILL good!! 🤭 I also ended up baking them because I only had capacity for passive cooking at that point. Very yummy, would make again.

Yay! Glad the fritters were enjoyed, Vanessa, love the idea to bake them too 🥰

These were awesome, my husband and I really liked them :) I changed the flour to chickpea flour for even more protein, but may do half chickpea flour and half all purpose flour next time to make them stick together better. I topped mine with just some plain yogurt, and my husband liked them with spicy ketchup instead. They feel very balanced and healthy!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the tempeh fritters recipe, Anna and Saurabh 🫶

Maria - June 16, 2024, 7:37 p.m.

Sounds delicious, looking forward to making these for my family, this week. Any idea how many grams the sweet potato might've been? Last time I tried making something similar the texture(and frying success) was really off as I couldn't get the amount of veggies right 😅

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 18, 2024, 10:53 p.m.

Hey Maria, thank you for the feedback. We're exploring adding weights to some vegetables to recipes in the future 🥰 In the meantime, our medium sweet potatoes weigh about 200 grams!

Maria - June 19, 2024, 9:39 a.m.

Thanks a lot! Feeling well prepared for dinner now 🤗

Very delicious!!! Definitely will make these again!

These were tasty and nutritious. I ate them as a main for breakfast.

Renata - March 5, 2024, 6:06 a.m.

Hi, friends. I look forward to trying this recipe, but I cannot find sambal oelek nearby. Can I substitute it with sriracha or harissa paste? Hugs and kisses from Italy!

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 5, 2024, 7:12 a.m.

Hey Renata, you can indeed use an alternative chili paste or sauce, such as sriracha. Harissa is a touch spicier so if you use instead perhaps start with less and add more to taste. Hugs to Italy 🤗

Renata - March 5, 2024, 4:48 p.m.

Thanks a lot!

Lukáš Král - Feb. 14, 2024, 8:23 p.m.

Overall very enjoyable. Wasn't a big fan of the dip at first, but after letting it chill for a while in a fridge, it tasted much better.

Yara - Dec. 26, 2023, 4:18 p.m.

Hi! Is it possible to replace tempeh with tofu and leave out the rice?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Dec. 27, 2023, 1:37 a.m.

Hey Tara, yes, you can replace tempeh with tofu in the fritter recipe, using firm or extra-firm tofu after pressing out excess moisture. As for omitting the rice, I'm not entirely sure how that would affect the texture and binding of the fritters, so you may need to experiment with the flour quantity so that the fritters bind well enough. Let us know how it goes if you do experiment with it :)

Yara - Dec. 27, 2023, 7:33 a.m.

Thank you for your answer!

Joseph Anderson - Dec. 10, 2023, 2:42 a.m.

Delicious! This was a unique flavor combination. I was looking for a new way to use tempeh and this was perfect. I didn't have corn so I used peas instead.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Dec. 10, 2023, 3:11 a.m.

So glad that the fritters were enjoyed, Joseph, and a lovely idea to use peas instead! 😊

Angela Brant - Oct. 19, 2023, 11:09 a.m.

Hi! Can i freeze these? Thanks

PUL small logo PUL Team - Oct. 19, 2023, 5:48 p.m.

Hey Angela, we haven't tested it out to be honest. Our hesitation is that defrosted sweet potatoes don't keep their form so well and can get mushy. Let us know how it goes if you give it a try though 😊

Sandra - Aug. 15, 2023, 1:01 a.m.

Absolutely delicious! Loved the spice. I used tofu because Tempeh is hard to get where I live, but it still worked perfectly.

As a sidenote: these are definitely filling enough to be a main dish. I underestimated that, I originally planned for them to be a side dish… oh well, leftovers are also great. :)

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 15, 2023, 5:44 p.m.

Hehe these ones can indeed be quite filling! So glad they were enjoyed with tofu too, Sandra 😊

Michelle - June 8, 2023, 11:57 p.m.

These were delicious!!
