Ingredients
Vegan donuts
-
2 cups (276 g)all-purpose flour
-
2 tsp (9 g)baking powder
-
⅔ cup (149 g)granulated sugar
-
½ tspsalt
-
1 cup (240 mL)unsweetened soy milk
-
2 oz (56 g)unsalted vegan butter, melted
-
2 Tbsp (30 mL)unsweetened applesauce
Vanilla glaze
-
½ cup (67 g)powdered sugar
-
½ Tbsp (7 mL)unsweetened soy milk
-
½ tsp
Cinnamon sugar coating
-
0.99 oz (28 g)unsalted vegan butter
-
3 Tbsp (42 g)granulated sugar
-
1 tsp (3 g)ground cinnamon
Optional toppings
-
freeze-dried raspberries
Directions
- Lightly grease a donut pan and preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C)*.
- Place a sieve over a large bowl, and sift in the flour and baking powder. Then add the sugar and salt, and mix well.
- Then add the milk, butter, applesauce, and vanilla. Stir until combined, but try not to overmix.
- Fill each donut well until ¾ full. Bake on the center rack for 15 - 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean.
- Make the vanilla glaze by combining the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla in a bowl**. If the glaze is too thick, add a small splash more milk. Add a few drops of optional food colouring if desired.
- Prepare the cinnamon sugar coating by mixing the sugar and cinnamon together on a plate. In a separate shallow bowl, melt the butter.
- Remove the donuts from the oven and let cool for 2 minutes before flipping the donuts onto a wire rack until they are cool enough to handle, but still warm.
- Dip half of the donuts in the glaze. For a thicker coating, let the first coat dry completely and then dip the donut in the glaze again.
- For the sugar-cinnamon donuts, quickly dip the remaining donuts in the melted butter, and then in the mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
- Transfer the frosted donuts to a wire rack and add optional toppings (like sprinkles) while the glaze is still wet. Enjoy!
Notes
- * We used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection).
- ** This recipe makes enough for half of the donuts to have the glazed topping, and half of the donuts to have the sugar-cinnamon topping.
Storage
- The donuts can be stored in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make donuts without a donut pan?
Yes, you can make donuts without a doughnut pan. One way is to roll the dough into balls and use your fingers or a small cutter to make the hole in the middle. If you’re baking, place the shaped dough on a lined baking sheet and then bake in the oven. You can also use a muffin tin and create donut shapes with little aluminum foil molds.
How can I make vegan air fried donuts?
To make vegan donuts in the air fryer, prepare the dough as usual, then pop the shaped donuts in a preheated air fryer at 350°F (175°C). Cook them for around 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even baking.
What toppings can I use for vegan donuts?
Aside from the classic vanilla glaze and cinnamon sugar coating, you could try dusting them with powdered sugar, adding sprinkles, or even dipping them in a rich chocolate ganache made with dairy-free chocolate. The possibilities are endless!
How can I make vegan gluten free donuts?
We haven’t tried this recipe gluten-free yet, so we can’t say for sure how it will turn out. Typically, a gluten-free flour blend works better than just using one type of gluten-free flour though, such as a store-bought mix. If you decide to experiment with gluten-free substitutions, we’d love to hear how it goes in the comments!

I got a donut pan for Christmas this year and immediately wanted to try these. Oh, yum! They are delicious and very easy and simple to make. Will definitely be making them again and again. 😋
I have made these doughnuts several times and I absolutely love them! Super quick and easy to make and you can experiment with toppings.
Super yummy 😋 My kids loved them!
One of the best donut recipes we’ve had. Nice and versatile, these hold shape well and stand up to frosting and dipping without falling apart. Taste is great. We did the cinnamon sugar and a frosting with orange juice and zest. Thanks for another amazing recipe!!
We loved it! Made it for New Years with the kids, decorated with stars for fireworks! I love that it's a little bit healthier as well as it's baked, not fried. 🎆
Fast, easy, and yummy!🤗

Very easy to make!
They are simply amazing!
Backed them for my best friends birthday and she absolutely LOVED them. I’ve added a little lemon zest to make them a little more special. Even the non-vegan guests indulged in them 🥰 greetings from Germany!
It’s like duck donuts! 🤤
