Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
    vegetable oil
  • 1
    medium onion, diced
  • 1
    medium potato, cut into 1 cm cubes
  • 1 cup (205 g)
    dry green lentils, preferably soaked overnight
  • 1 cup (240 mL)
    water
  • ½ tsp
    ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp
    salt, plus more to taste

Directions

  1. Add the oil and onions to a medium pot on medium-high heat and sauté until the onions are lightly golden, about 3 - 5 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients. Cook at a gentle simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  3. Serve, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Soaking isn't necessary but helps to increase nutrient absorption and quickens cooking time.

I loved following the prompts of the recipe! This is the best cooking app! I was skeptical of putting cinnamon in a potato dish but it’s blended with the cumin and absolutely delicious! I mixed it with cauliflower and mushrooms and it made a perfect Friday night by the fire dish!

In the last month, I've cooked this three times, including last night for a dinner with friends. This time I added spinach and cherry tomatoes in the end (the tomatoes, I put them in a pan with pepper and oregano first to make them softer and more flavorful). Delicious and easy, absolute go-to.

I'm challenging myself to use up all foods in my fridge and pantry instead of going out to eat for 2 weeks since I'm not working. I saw I had 1/4 cup of green lentils and onion and went to ask my mom for a potato. Lol. The lentils were soaked for almost 90 min and became 1 cup :) I was hesitant on turmeric and cinnamon but trusted. Wow!!! Sooo good. I needed a lil more salt but that's an easy fix. This is delicious and so easy. PUL for the WIN

Can you use cooked lentil like from a jar or tin?

Hey IzzieO, yes you can with some adjustments. Since lentils from a jar or tin are pre-cooked, you'll need less water for cooking the potatoes and can add the lentils at the end of the recipe. When in doubt, add less water, you can always add more as needed :)

I was hesitant to put cinnamon in the food as I personally find it only fitting for desserts, but I actually loved it so much! The taste is there but it just adds to the flavour and doesn't overshadow the lentils or the potatoes. I am so happy that I now have an alternative recipe for my lentils too!

If I use sweet potato (instead of potato), shall I reduce cooking time?

Hi Mary, sweet potato may impact the cooking time slightly but the lentils will still need around 20 minutes. We'd recommend soaking the lentils overnight before cooking and keeping an eye on the pot more closely. Soft lentils and potatoes are a sign it's ready 😊

SO delicious, easy and quick! I also ended up spooning aside some of the cooked lentils (once the dish was completely made) and mashed into a paste to use as a spread for wraps and sandwiches.
