These take a really long time to cook and don’t actually end up getting soft. I suggest cooking it more like a cobbler and slicing up the apples.

Hey Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe. The type of apples used can affect how much they soften while baking. Red Delicious, McIntosh, and Golden Delicious apples tend to break down faster when they bake, resulting in softer apples. Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp apples, on the other hand, stay firm and crisp. With these versions, if you want them to get soft, you indeed need to bake them for longer. I've added a recipe note with this info to help others as well - thanks again for taking the time to help us improve what we do! 🙂
