Ingredients
-
1 Tbsp (7 g)ground flaxseeds
-
3 Tbsp (45 mL)water
-
3ripe bananas
-
¾ cup (168 g)granulated sugar
-
⅓ cup (80 mL)unsweetened applesauce
-
-
1 tsp (5 g)baking soda
-
1 tsp (5 g)baking powder
-
½ tspsalt
-
1½ cups (207 g)all-purpose flour
-
Directions
- Add the ground flaxseeds and water to a large bowl. Mix, and set aside for 5 minutes to gel.
- Lightly grease or line a muffin tin and preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)*.
- Add the bananas to the flaxseed mixture and mash well.
- Whisk in the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla.
- Add the cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, and mix again.
- Then add the flour, mixing until partly combined. Then gently fold in the chocolate. Be careful not to over-mix
- Evenly divide the batter into the prepared muffin tin. Top each muffin with extra chocolate chunks, if desired, and bake on the middle rack of the oven for about 15 - 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Enjoy!
Notes
- †Refined coconut oil is coconut oil that doesn't smell or taste like coconuts. If you prefer a distinct coconut taste, use unrefined coconut oil instead.
- * We used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection).
Storage
- Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days.
- Store in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.

These are incredible! I made a few modifications and it still came out perfectly.
- added 1 egg in addition to flax
- blended the bananas
- 175g bobs mill whole wheat flour
- 58g coconut sugar (and I will probably try even less sugar next time!)
Perfection! 😍
So much chocolat, so wonderful
Fantastic, even without sugar! Thank you Sadia 🫶
Muffins used to be the only recipe I could whip up from memory any time, in any flavour, and always succeed, but then we went plantbased and no recipe ever hit the spot quite the same for years - until I tried this one. Moist, tasty, cannot stop eating them fresh out of the oven. Another gem from PUL!
Really tasty moist muffins. I used a vegetable oil and half cup of sugar. They still came out well and judging by what's left, obviously a hit. I keep ripe bananas in the freezer just for this reason.
Delicious and easy to make (quick, too!). Shared with friends and they all raved!
loved these, but put a bit more chocolate in. didn’t have apple sauce, subbed for soja jogurt 😋
Made a batch with 50% less sugar for my daughter’s birthday party. ALL KIDS AND ADULTS LOVE THEM!
I really enjoyed these muffins, they're the perfect sweet treat. The chocolate complements the banana. I froze them and reheated in the air fryer. They would get crispy around the edges and maintain their fluffiness on the inside.
These are very easy to make and very very good. Swapped out the apple sauce for yogurt (didn’t have apple sauce) and added a little bit of runny peanut butter to the mix and they were awesome!
Hello i wonder do we really have to add granulated sugar? I’m on diet now and with my thyroid I try to eat less sugar. Also does the gluten free flour works ? Thank you in advance
This was the easiest thing to make! And a great snack for the kids! We gave this a try at night, hoping it wouldn’t take too long, and were delighted by the results!
Always a staple for me. Love the ability to make treats and control the level of sweetness and make from scratch vs store bought or highly processed. 🥰🙌
Hi Sadia, what can I use instead of applesauce in this receipie?
We love these muffins, but would love a healthier option with the same flavor. Would it taste similar if we used rolled oats or oat flour instead?
These were delicious!
I used 2/3 of the sugar (half a cup in 12 muffin portion). They turned out plenty sweet and fluffy and moist. They rose well too. 🧁
I love these! I recommend sifting the coco powder. Maybe everyone already knows that??
Hey how many flax egg is this equal in eggs in real life??
These are really delicious. Thanks for this recipe.
This is one of my comfort dessert for my work lunches. I make them again and again and again. They are just sooooo good!
I saw another comment that said if you are using a very ripe banana use less sugar, so I did. Even with one banana it is very sweet. I don't have flax seeds so I used chia and it turned out fine. My toaster oven doesn't have 375 so I baked at 400f for 20 mins. These are very filling and delicious snack. Next time I make these I will make sure I mash the banana first before adding the chia egg as it was harder to do lol.
Just popping in to leave 5 stars. I made these muffins several times now and they're always a hit!
Super delicious muffin shaped brownies as we call them! My kiddos love them!
These muffins were so easy to put together. I was sceptical about the amount the sugar and apple sauce but I trusted the process. These muffins are great for an after dinner snack when ideally I'm feeling for a whole chocolate cake LOL.
So yum and easy! I never baked anything successful before this.
Hi I made this and it’s 👩🍳💋. I’m not vegan though so added 2 eggs instead of flax egg and a cup of regular milk. I DEFEINITELY reccomend this recipe as well as every other on the channel, website, and app to anyone of any type! Btw I’m a Californian!
Delicious and so easy!!
My husband keeps stealing all the muffins when I make these! These muffins are a staple in our household.
Made them many times! If your Bananas are more rippend put less sugar
My Favorit, made them many times. Watch out for very ripe Bananas, if there not totally yellow then the banana is sweeter, put less sugar, if not it’s sweeter
Great muffins! Easy to follow along and great snack.
Loved them!!
Absolutely delicious muffins! They seem to be even better the next day after setting in an airtight container over night.
These are so good! I made them with whole wheat flour and used 1 egg instead of an apple purée, ‼️‼️definitely use LESS sugar since there's lot of natural sweetness from bananas in the recipe
These are so good! I just made them for the first time, the only thing I did differently was using margarine instead of the coconut oil, and I didn't add chocolate pieces too. They had to bake for about 25 minutes, but they turned out really moist and perfect!!! Ty PUL for making vegan sweets taste like this!
I used one egg instead of flaxseed and it is still perfect and delicious 🤩
Made these this morning they were really moist and good just too sweet.. think next time would do less sugar or would honey or agave syrup work? Also wondered about using wheat flour
Surprisingly light and fluffy. Such a good muffin recipe.
Absolutely love that recipe 😍 so nice for breakfast, snack and dessert !
I replaced the all-purpose flour by 1 t. Spelled flour + 1/2 t. Almond flour. That took 35 min cooking but was delicious!
Would you have a gluten-free version to suggest?
Thanks again for the delightful recipes you and your team are creating 🔥💜
Hands down the best vegan muffins j tried. I have been making over and over for about 3 years and nobody can tell they are vegan.
Hey hey dear Sadia and strong team ! I'd really like to make those babies oggi for the 1st time, but jus been to the shop ieri and dont feel like going again - but don't have applesauce nor coconut oil - how could i replace them so that the consistency is still good ? Thanks heaps!
Really enjoyed making these for a picnic and loved them, so happy with the outcome!
Would it work if you froze the batter then baked it frozen the next day?
Incredible! I didn’t have apple sauce so replaced with cooked sweet potato. Also used coconut sugar. So so good!
Gorgeous! I already made them twice and both times were perfect. Love them 💛
Absolutely delicious. The best part is that I already had all of the ingredients!
So delicious and decadent! Easy ingredients I already had. I am definitely using this recipe again!
Super yummy! I used almost fully brown bananas, and the muffins were very very sweet. I also swapped the white flour for WW and it was great! Next time I’ll add 1/4 cup more cocoa, and 1/4 cup less flour. I’ll also probably reduce the amount of sugar next time. Thanks for a great recipe!
Deeeelicious!!! I subbed for oat flour 👌👌
The previous night I took a few frozen muffins out of the freezer, so in the morning me and my family had a delicious breakfast to start the week. Perfect recipe from all points of view: easy to follow, to make and great end result
These were delicious! I only had coconut sugar and I cut the sugar down to 1/2 cup, still plenty sweet for us. Next time I might throw in a few chopped walnuts. Thank you for the wonderful recipe.
Excellent! Used 1/2 cup sugar instead of 3/4 and still sweet enough!
Super tasty! Added on my favorite recipes.
Wow these are amazing!!! My husband loved them. These muffins will probably become a staple in our home. I used brown sugar instead of granulated sugar and subbed banana for applesauce. Thank you Sadia and team!
My go to muffin recipe, just love it! Everybody is always super impressed with how gooey and tasty they are! 😋 Kids and adults love them!!
Just tried them today! So delicious! And the recipe was super easy to follow. Though I got 18 with the measurements for 12, but no complaints there! We’ll be making these again! Thank you!
I’ve made these twice in 2 days if that says anything 😂 We offered some from the first batch to our neighbor and she loved them so much that she asked if she could have more for her dinner guests! So we gave her the rest and whipped up more today 🤗
Super chocolatey and moist and delicious, and I can see myself making them again and again.
Hi. Is there a substitute for applesauce?
Soo yummy! 🤎
Delicious delicious yumm I used a little less apple sauce cause I didn’t have the required amount but the were still delicious. Can you do a substitution list?
As every PUL recipes also this one is amazing. Highly suggested
They’re so much softer and moister than I expected. Definitely a win!
Loging the app and how easy it is to follow a recipe. Tried the double chocolate muffins today with my 5yo daughter, she was engaged every step
These are a hit in our house and a great way to use up leftover bananas 😊
Are there any non-oil alternatives to the coconut oil in this recipe that you'd recommend? Like additional banana or vegan yogurt for instance?
This was so delicious!!!! Very filling as well which I loved. My little brothers loved it, very nice and moist, and soft texture! Will be making again!
Those muffins are great! We make then often and anyone who tries them raves. Thanks for the many recipes we have tried and loved. Your site is so easy to use !
Jackie
This is a family hit! We don't make them fully vegan (use semi-sweet chocolate chips) and sometimes an egg if we don't have applesauce on hand. But they are a great way to use up our extra ripe bananas when we want a chocolatey treat instead of banana bread. I love that it gets all mixed up in one bowl for less dishes and its easy enough that my kids love to help out.
Moving on to test some of the soup recipes next!
These sound great and Hu is my favorite chocolate right now and I can’t believe it’s the one you linked. Wow. Making these tomorrow!
These are def a treat like a cupcake :) I didnt have 3 bananas, so I subbed about 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree. I also added a bit of water since my batter was dry. These are super easy and tasty. Nuke for 15 seconds, and they are just perfect! They are extremely banana-y, so even with 2 bananas, the flavor of the chocolate was just slight. I would experiment with more pumpkin and less banana next time to make these a tad less sweet and banana-forward.
perfect lazy sunday dessert ✨🧁
Wish there wasn't as much white flour in this recipe. 😌
Superb recipe
If I don’t have ground flaxseed, can I use whole flaxseeds instead? If not, what are good substitutes?
Saw your story and made it right away. Such a treat! It's like banana bread and chocolate, what's not to like?
Is there something we can use instead of the applesauce?
I tried these with your chocolate frosting and they were divine! Thank you so much!
(frosting: https://www.pickuplimes.com/recipe/vegan-chocolate-buttercream-frosting-843)
I tried making muffins but they always end up uncooked in the middle. The outside bakes to the point of burning whilst the inside is hollow. I use a oven like air fryer.
I omitted the oil and sugar, just ajustes the recipe to my dietary requirements.
What am I doing wrong?
I thought it was the tins but when I used ceramic ones the same thing happened.
Am I overloading the fryer? Does the expiration of baking powder matter?
Thank you
Very tasty! And goo-y!
When I baked them 15 minutes , took them out of the oven and let them cool down and got the cakes out of their siliconmuffinshapes, the bottoms were very soggy, some parts even stuck to the bottom of the muffintin.
Did I grease the tins too much?
I ended up flipping the cakes upside down and baked them for another 15 minutes, which helped but the tops on the bottom got a bit dark.
Any tips?
I used 2/3 of the sugar suggested and it was still good! I would say I used chocolate that was too dark so it made the muffins bitter. But otherwise a really good vegan chocolate banana muffin recipe.
So good! I used frozen bananas, the result was great!
I did this recipe multiple times, it's always a success. These muffins are DELICIOUS! Thank you.
Recommend!! Best recipe when you have bananas that are not looking the best. Or even if you just want a good banana/chocolate treat.
So good!! No fluffy I made little mini ones too.
❤️❤️
These are a dream! So moist and chocolatey - everything you ever want in a muffin.
Literally the best muffins I've ever made! So fluffy, not dry at all and the banana-chocolate flavour is just perfect <3 Thank you PUL :D
Incredibly delicious!!
These muffins taste like cupcakes! So delicious! I added an extra banana instead of the applesauce so its super banana-y
These muffins are just delicious! I’m a pastry chef and experimenting with vegan recipes for the home cook. Replaced coconut oil with a light extra virgin olive oil. Baked up great. Thanks so much!!
Hands down best muffins ever! We were amazed how fluffy and delicious they were!!
Congratulations Sadia and pick up limes team!!!
They came out from the oven super tasty - really packed with flavour - so everyone loved them! Will definitely do this recipe again. And it worked great to replace the flaxseed with chia seeds.
great after freezing!
Delish! Delish! Delicious!
I'm at it again! :D
I made one substitute and reduced the amount; I used a melted butter instead of an oil and they were perfect! Moist, chocolatey, gooey, and fluffy. Smelled fabulous. The banana undertone (used two since that's all I had) was wonderful. Next time, I'll try the coconut oil :)
Taking them to work for a coworker's bday! So thankful and excited! :)
Just a fun anecdote: While having a lovely conversation with a grocery attendant about a few ingredients I was looking for, we touched based on tahini and what one could do with it. I've been using it in overnight oats going on three weeks now and with a few other dishes. I showed her my favorite brand and typed in 'tahini' in the search bar of the PUL website and she was blown away by the beauty of it all! I scrolled up and down and showed her the feature of the recipe scale, filter features, and the photos!! She was captivated by it all that she told me to stop! HA! This was after she had told me how hard it was to keep her paycheck since she works at a fun grocery store.
Thanks PUL for all the hard work, dedication, joy, and beauty that you put into this mission.
Truly grateful,
L
Absolutely love these! We keep coming back to this recipe every time and it never disappoints! Thanks Sadia for sharing so many great recipes with all of us and congrats on the new website! 😊
These are so so good! Especially helpful right before your period when those chocolate cravings are at its worst! Really delicious and my neice has a great time liking the bowl after we put them in the muffin tin. I thinks its her favorite part to be honest, aside from when she eats them!
Delicious recipe. Made two times: first time used banana instead apple sauce, turned out still delicious but more firm, second time made it with home made apple sauce and turned out amazing and soft. My 2 year old and 5 year old love it, too. So I could say children approved^^. This one is one of my favourites sweet recipe. ^^
This recipe is great! I just tried it out and used soybased yoghurt instead of applesauce and granulated stevia (as i can't have apples & sugar), the muffins still came out very fluffy and tasty :)
Love this recipe! Although I had to bake the muffins longer than 15 minutes, they came out deliciously moist and fluffy!
Delicious recipe. I made these today with home-made apple sauce (first time I have ever made apple sauce, and I didn't realise it was so easy!) .I will definitely be making these again :)
Absolutely love this recipe- I return to it constantly. Quick and delicious!
Thanks PUL for making these easy to access and easy to follow :) ❤️
Delicious!
I swap sugar to dates and the muffin still tastes amazing!
I have been making this recipe for 2 years and this is my absolute go-to snacks/breakfast idea!
These are the most amazing muffins! Even though I don't make them fully vegan, double up on the cocoa and use less sugar (I think the bananas are sweet enough to just use 100g sugar), this is my favourite muffin recipe. They are ALWAYS a hit with everyone; people especially comment on the texture which is moist and fluffy. Even my slightly critical Dad asked me to send him the recipe. :)
I usually don't love chocolate-banana anything but I'd be lying if I said I haven't eaten several of these when I got peckish... They're simply divine.
These are amazing!! So chocolatey and rich!
I tried this recipe for a party. Everyone liked it!
This recipe is amazing, super tasty! I made it as a cake instead of muffins, 30 minutes in the oven and it's ready, super rich and moist. Thank you!
These are the most AMAZING chocolate muffins, enjoyed by kids and non-vegans alike (not that I'd want to share)! 🤤
Delicious! My kids loved them!
Thank you so much for these recipes and for all that you do! Your videos are a major reason into why I adapted a Vegan lifestyle and eating amazing wholesome foods.😊
They turned out so great! Thanks.
A truly awesome muffin recipe! My Toddler loves these but I want to adapt the recipe to make mini muffins instead. What would be your suggestions? Thank you.
Hi PUL! I'm trying to create healthy snacks for my kids to avoid giving them snacks with preservatives in them. So THANK YOU so much for this muffin recipe! What "grease" did you use to grease the muffin tin in the video? and was that regular paper napkin that you used to grease it? Is your muffin tin a non-stick one? If not, what type is it?
Sooooo tasty, thank you for this amazing recipe! 😊
Best muffins EVER 😍
