Ingredients
Hummus
-
1½ cups (246 g)cooked chickpeas
-
1lemon, juiced
-
1 Tbsp (15 mL)extra virgin olive oil
-
2garlic cloves
-
½ tspsalt
-
¼ cup (60 mL)ice water
Optional garnish
-
fresh basil
-
ground cumin
-
pomegranate seeds
Make your own
Directions
- Add all of the ingredients, except for the water, to a food processor and blend on high until smooth.
- While the mixture is blending, in a thin and steady stream, add half of the ice water to the food processor*. If desired, skip this step by simply adding the water in with the ingredients in step #1.
- Taste test the hummus. If too thick, add the remaining water. For a creamier consistency, add more olive oil and/or tahini. For more zest, add more lemon juice. Plate, garnish, and serve!
Notes
- * Adding the water in this way helps to aerate the hummus and make it more 'fluffy'.
Storage
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

It is the best humus that I have ever eaten! Thank you♥️
Love this hummus recipe
Very tasty!
So yummy and easy to do. Could you eventually update the recipe with the amount of uncooked chickpeas in option ? It’s hard to determine. Thanks.
Easy quick and delicious
I love the recipe! But can I use blender instead of food processor? I didn't start yet and I'm afraid it won't come out good...
Delicious. I can't believe I used to buy pre-made bland hummus. This is a lot more tasty, easier on the wallet and layered with flavors! Highly recommend. I deviated slightly and added roasted garlic I stead of raw.
Delicious - and super-easy!
Can’t wait to try the variations in the other comments! Thank you!
yum!
Amazing 👏
Simple and easy. I did add a bit more oil and tahini. Next time i will do less garlic (2 cloves were strong!).
Came out delicious! I added more salt and paprika for a bit more flavor.
The smoothest hummus I've ever made! Delicious and so easy to make, a perfect way to use up some leftover chickpeas
THANK YOU for sharing this Lemon & Garlic hummus recipe!! Even though I've made 'fancy' hummus before, I found lemon hummus at Costco (didn't know it was a thing?!) and was determined to make my own!! After trying another creators' recipe which was 'meh', I found the PUL recipe .... YOURS IS BY FAR THE BEST and the only hummus flavor I make now. FABULOUSO!! (TIP to newbies: use the lemon zest and 3 garlic cloves!)
Just made this with my son's, who is a junior sous chef, flat bread. We added some paprika and some roasted red peppers finely chopped to your base recipe. Yum yum WOW!
This is amazing! Last time I made it I added a couple of green olives to it and it turned out better than any store bought olive hummus!
Easiest, tastiest and fastest hummus I’ve ever made!!
Thank You 🙏
This is a keeper. I used what I had on hand..peanut butter for the tahini and a bit more lemon :-)
This was a perfect hummus recipe I made at home! Forgot to adjust the salt but otherwise it is delicious!
I just made this hummus. It’s very good and better than store bought. I love you recipes 💕
As usual, recipes are amazing and easy to follow. This blog never disappoints! Thanks.
So good and such a simple recipe to make regularly, thank you! Do you have a black bean hummus recipe too? Maybe I could make it similarly to this recipe except swap the lemon for lime and add some cumin and cilantro?
So simple and so much tastier than bought!!
In stead of water I always add a little bit of the aquafaba to the mix. This gives the hummus that wonderfully yummie flyffyness 😍
Gorgeous
Amazing
I've been making this recipe for two years, but just now was the first time I added the water in step 2 rather than with all the ingredients in step 1 (unfortunately, cold but not iced). It was also the first time I weighed the ingredients with a scale rather than using cups! I don't know which had the most impact, but I just made the best hummus out of this recipe ever, I feel like just grabbing a spoon xD Thank you, PUL!
Easy, fast , so good -can’t say enough 😋
I am a huge fan of hummus. This recipe is tasty, simple and very easy to make. Hummus is a versatile and nourishing menu. I cannot wait to try your varieties of hummus recipes.
Delicious and super simple - thank you! I made two batches, one exactly as directed and another with extra garlic and a bunch of chives from my garden. So tasty!
My favorite hummus recipe❤️ So easy and so good!
It’s my favourite hummus recipe. I omit garlic (or simply reduce) as this is just me personal preference- but this is my staple that I do every other week (mixing this with the roasted bell pepper hummus)
I love this recipie! Thank you
Sooooo good! The water really helps ❤️
So easy, satisfying and delicious!!! (I started with dried chickpeas that I cooked in my slow cooker)
La star des houmous. Une valeur sûre qui plaît à tous les coups
Loooooved this! I put 1/2 garlic clove instead of 2 cause I find it too pungent otherwise, but it is the best hummus I ever made
I thought making hummus was complicaed, and I was lazy, so I always ended up buying it in the store 😅 this recipe is super easy and delicious, I prefer the taste of this one to the store bought one now 😊 I like it a bit less acidy so I only use half of a lemon's juice to make it
I’ve tried multiple hummus recipes with thousands of ratings but I’ve found that this one is the best! Love that there doesn’t need to be too much tahini to make it delicious
I literally just finished making this and omg! My new favorite! 😊 … I added a little hint of paprika and it seems to work …
My new years resolution was to start making hummus myself instead of buying. This recipe made it so easy! Love the fluffy texture :)
Fantastic recipe! 🤩🤩🤩 Super simple and so delicious! Thank you Sadia!
Do you know if I can freeze it, if I make a big quantity?
It must sound so pathetic that I have always preferred store-bought Hummus over homemade one… Every time I tried to make my own Hummus, I ended up hating the result! 🤢🫣
But this simple recipe changed my whole world! 🪄Thank you so much for providing incredible inspiration for lazy cooks like me! ✨🙌🏽✨👩🏻🍳
Delicious! I have tried other hummus recipes and they were all just so-so. This one was fantastic! I will not need to get store-bought ever again!!
So easy and absolutely stunning!!!
Why did I ever buy ready-made?
Absolutely delicious!!
Best hummus recipe, a staple in our house, the kids love it with cucumber, bell peppers and carrots. 😋😋😋
Best hummus ever!!!!
This is the best hummus recipe! Staple in our house. Also amazing without the oil. Thanks!
Amazing recipe. A perfect base for other variations. I love EVERYTHING from Pick Up Limes.
I can’t believe how easy this was & how long I have waited to make my own hummus! Good bye store bought!
Super easy and delicious
This is such a great and versatile recipe 👍🏼👌 can you let me know how long it can be stored in the fridge?
Thankyou 😊
I always use your recipes to make hummus. Thank you!!
Love fresh hummus! Always a favorite!
Love the consistency. I guess the icy water trick works. A little too bland for my taste. Added more salt, pepper and cumin.
It's so simple I will try it . Because others YouTube videos are so complicated.
Delicious!
Delicious!! I'm not a fan of tahini, so I replaced it with olive oil, and this is to die for!
Comes out perfect every single time :)
Still the best hummus! I made two batches this time!
This is my go to hummus recipe! Always a hit!
Quick and easy hummus. I love the garlic, I also add Caramelized onion, 1/2 into the mixture in the food processor and the other 1/2 as a topping on the plated hummus. Soo good!!
For me.. next time I will use less lemon but otherwise yummy dip😊
Perfect! Thanks
Have you ever tried adding red roasted peppers? I might experiment next time & try that! I bet that could be yummy as well.. ooh and many some cocoa powder & agave for a dessert dip! This recipe has got me brainstorming! lol.. Much love❤️
I was craving hummus and didn’t want to drag my kids out to the food store! I knew I had a can of chickpeas in my pantry & just threw all the ingredients as you listed into my mini bullet blender without high expectations! lol.. Woah! So good! So easy! Way better than any store bought hummus! I think I will cut it down to 1 garlic clove next tho cause even tho it was tasty, I am experiencing some crazy garlic breath! lol.. Thanks for sharing this super easy, delicious recipe❤️
Just perfect !
Delicious!
A bow to this recipe!!!
Best hummus ever! ✨
The second time I made this recipe I didn't have tahini, I opted to put soy sauce, it turned out amazing!
Love this recipe, so delicious and creamy!
The best hummus I have ever made! So delicious!
Soooo yummy and easy to make
I've done those a bunch of times and can't stop! Best hummus!!!
Super quick and easy, and even better than the store bought hummus. The ice water trick was new to me, it’s really helpfull with getting the right consistency!
Quick, easy and homemade with no store bought mystery ingredients!
This simple recipe tastes amazing; and makes more servings than you get in a standard store bought tub for a fraction of the $$$!
I used it as a veggie dip, on naan bread, in a veggie wrap and still have some left to nibble on.
I’m looking forward to trying another hummus version soon!
Has become a staple recipe! Love that it’s very simple and easy to modify.
One of my favorites. I replace the lemon for orange to make it a little sweet😀
I loved it! It taste delicious😋
Super yummy and really easy! I bought canned chickpeas so I didn’t have to cook or soak the chickpeas earlier.
Our little girl loves it!
This was my first time making hummus, and it is the most delicious hummus I have ever had! Thank you PUL! I’m so happy :)
Classic and delicious! It was perfect on veggie sandwiches, with carrots, with a spoon… :)
The whole family enjoyed it, even my toddlers, so I’d say it’s a keeper!
The best and fluffiest hummus I have ever tried and so quick and easy to make. Your app has really inspired me to take some time for myself and just have fun cooking. Thank you!
I love this hummus! I always bring it to parties and my friends and family love it as well
Delicious, nutritious and easy to make. Garlic sensitive individuals might want to start with 1 clove, then add according to taste.
I've made my first hummus with this recipe and I'm so happy because it taste sooo good 😍
I love this classic hummus recipe. It tastes wonderful, the perfect balance of tang and smoothness. I don’t normally garnish the finished dish with anything more that olive oil as it gets demolished so quickly, lol.
This recipe is AMAZING! My daughter and I love humus. I have made humus before and sadly, it was horrible. I made homemade tahini and it was really bitter (the bane of my existence🤣), but when I added it to your recipe, somehow it all went away!!! It is so delish and my girl and I have been eating it by the spoonfull😊. THANK YOU!
Yammie de pammie!
Really enjoyed this hummus! Hummus in my family is a must have, that if we don't have it for quite a while it starts to be missed lol. My family really loved this hummus recipe, the only thing is that it didn't say to roast the garlic and that is why when I tasted it, it was pretty garlicy, but overall next time I'll roast them and get that nice combined flavor.
Amazing recipe!
I make this twice every week <3
Amazing! It was my first time making hummus and it came out beautiful and delicious! Will definitely repeat!
This recipe makes for THE BEST hummus of all time! But that doesn't mean I won't try out the other variations on the site. ;-)
Thanks PUL!!
I was searching for your hummus recipe that had paprika, balsamic, cumin and soy sauce in it. Where did that go on the website? Can you repost?
I keep coming back to this one over and over, it's the best hummus recipe ever!
Your recipe looks delicious. Thank you!
The one and only hummus recipe!
Hey, your hummus just saved my life. Being a college student, making hummus as staple food. Saved a lot of tie and nourished n tasty. thank you for the great recipe
Hi PUL, I made this tonight with 3 cups of cooked chickpeas (so doubled the base recipe) but it turned out way too watery, it was like a hummus soup. I didn’t use the full amount of water either. Flavour is great though, next time I might skip adding the water
Love this great flavours ,we really enjoyed it,served it with rice crackers
This is my go-to hummus recipe; I make it all the time. Much nicer than store bought hummus and super simple to make at home. It’s never lasted me 5 days though!
Delicious. So much better than store bought. 🤗 I love making this and many of the other recipes. Thank you.
Amazing! It turned out perfect. This is so much better than anything I can get from WholeFoods. I couldn't believe how quickly it came together. Thank you! My friends will think I'm a Hummas Jedi.
After wandering from unsatisfying hummus recipes to not quite so satisfying hummus recipes, i'm happy to report i've found my all times favorite recipe in this one ! Thanks !!!
This recipe is a hit with my 2 kids (5 and under) and husband. I sub out the oil with tahini for an oil free version. Delicious!
Hi, The recipe calls for cooked chickpeas. This is probably a very stupid question, but I'm not familiar with chickpeas, sorry. How did you cook them? I have canned chickpeas. How do I cook them to prepare for this recipe?
Thanks!
Hi! I've tried this hummus today and it was amazing! My sister loved it as well! Unfortunately I didn't have tahini, and so I just added another tablespoon of olive oil, but in the end it was still very tasty! Thank you! =)
I always make this recipe. It's so simple and perfect. Thank you!
I have tried a few other hummus recipes before finding yours, and I have to say this will be my go to one from now on. I love your website and feel I can trust your knowledge and expertise. I am so glad I found you. I have just bought the pomegranate molasses! Can't wait. Thank you all so much :)
ICE WATER MADE MY HUMMUS FLUFFY AND SMOOTH MY FAMILY LOVES IT MUCH BETTER THAN MAYONNAISE!!!⭐🌟🌟🌟🌟
I love hummus and I had always wanted to try to make my own. Your recipe and instructions were so easy to follow and it came out delicious! Thank you for sharing your recipes with us!
i tried this hummus recipe today. It received rave reviews from the husband and I loved it too. It is delicious and easy. I’m definitely making this often. Also excited to try your tahini recipe. Thanks for everything you do and your positive attitude towards food and life in general.
I've alwayd loved hummus, and here in Sweden, you vän get it at anyy local store, so therefore I've nerver thought about maning my own. But do you know what? I will definitely try other variations of it. Thank you so much!! Wish I found your page/channel sooner, I've been obsessing over your youtube channel for weeks now!!!
I've never tried hummus before and oms it was mouth watering I'm definitely going to be making this more 🤤😋
I just made this hummus and kapow! Full of flavor!! Thank you for sharing this incredibly easy recipe. The hummus will not likely make it till tomorrow :D.
Thank you very much for the verbose description in recipes. It is very helpful. It will be more convenient if you could come with an app. Just a suggestion. Thanks again
Every time I wanna make hummus this is my recipe to go!
I tried this recipe and hummus came out to be awesome. I love the scaling feature, it allowed me to scale it down to two and I and my partner absolutely enjoyed it. Thank you Sadia and keep up the good work!

I have been making and loving this hummus for over a year now. So simple and so delicious!
Delicious! The only problem with this hummus is that I can't stop putting it on everything :D The garnishes really make it a feast for the eyes too. I've been watching your videos for at least 4 years and I've only just started using the PUL website as I now have a good set up for cooking as well as the mental space to dedicate to creating plant-based meals. Now instead of just drooling over the recipes in PUL videos, I get to make them and I have so many bookmarked!
I come back your channel time and time again, not only because the food looks incredible, but because of the wonderfully warm presence you bring and how it's obvious that you've put so much thought and consideration into the lives of your viewers with how recipes/advice videos could be adapted to them. It inspires me to try to bring more of this light into the world, too!
As someone who suffered from an eating disorder for over a decade and am now a few years into a good place, getting back into healthy and plant-based eating has historically led to a spiral when I would inevitably start thinking about the numbers. Admittedly, this week I did scroll down to check the nutrition in one of your recipes and instead found your philosophy to 'Nourish the Cells & the Soul' and it really made me take a step back. I haven't looked for the numbers since.
Sadia, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do with PUL and for the light you bring to the world. You have a fan for life <3
Sadia, Thanks for sharing the easiest way to make this delicious hummus! Perfect hummus recipe.
Best hummus yet, but unfortunately my food processor isn’t strong enough to make it store bought- smooth. Should I boil the canned chickpeas for it? Any tips?
Can you please provide a text only version of the recipe for printing as well?
Does anyone know approximately how many mls the juice of the lemon should be?
I love this hummus. I enjoy with experimenting with different types of hummus but it is always nice to return to the good old classic version and this is my go to recipe. I do think you should post your artisan hummus recipe from the previous blog on here as well though as that was epic!
My favorite homemade hummus recipe! It's flavorful, creamy without adding extra amounts of oil. I use it again and again.
So Amazing! I make it all the time!
The best! I make it every week :) my family loved it when I brought it to the family get together.
Made the classic garlic & lemon hummus today, and it's just the best! 😋 🥰 I additionally added some cumin and smoked paprika for some more flavors 😊 The cold water really worked nicely, thank you so much for sharing these recipes 💙
This is really really good. I don't have a food processor so I use a blender and it still works.
Love this recipe!!! Adding basil in the mix makes the hummus tastes so special. Thanks for creating this recipe!
This is such a good recipe. I’ve made it twice now. The first time I added a little smoked paprika and the second time some sun dried tomatoes and topped with a little Trader Joe’s sofrito mix. Fantastic both times!
Sooo tasty and simple to make!
So hummus is my fav thing and I love all the hummus you have made and I’m so happy I tried some new ones (betterave)
Also thank you for your tahini recipe ♥️
Great recipe! Now my snacks will be healty AND yummy :)
I always come back to this recipe! Love it
BEST. HUMMUS. EVER.
Hi Sadia,
Considering that I have had a love-hate relationship with hummus, this recipe is a game-changer and I am officially a hummus lover.
Unrelated but true, I am on my journey to understanding PCOS and developing a lifestyle that suits me. Chickpeas being a great source of plant-based protein, this recipe helps me create snacks that heal rather than harm me. Thank you so much!
Your website and YouTube Channel are a vital part of my de-stress routine! Your videos calms me down. So glad Pick Up Limes exists.
A fan from India,
Sana
We always eat bread for breakfast (living in Germany you learn to eat bread any time of the day :D). This hummus is very yummy on toasted bread!
It has become a staple in my house, I love this recipe !
This has such pure, balanced flavours. This is my favourite homemade hummus recipe from all the ones I've tried.
I make a batch of this hummus almost every week. It's delicious and works with so many recipes. :)
I really love this simple and perfect hummus recipe! I don't buy hummus anymore, I prefer to make my own thanks to Sadia. :)
I've made this Hummus a couple of times and it tastes really good. Just cut a couple of vegetables to dip and its perfect.
Best hummus recipe! It's so refreshing and satisfying, it works in so many recipes, and I have received nothing but compliments when friends/family try it. :)
Nice basic hummus, a bit less thick than traditional, so I would do half the water if you like your hummus thicker.
My "Go to" recipe for a perfect hummus <3
Always always make this every weekend now😄👌
Just made this and it must be the best hummus i’ve ever tasted. The condiments are perfectly balanced! I love this recipe so much. Thanks a lot for sharing
Always love a good old hummus! 😁 Thanks for adapting these recipes so that they are healthier!
hey! wondering if i can make this hummus using a hand blender or ninja cup....
I'm thinking of making the shell hummus pasta with this one. Any idea how much hummus this recipe yields in grams? I'm thinking slightly more than the grams of chickpeas used? Thanks! Love your recipes!
I love this recipe! I have tried many recipes but this one is by far my favourite!
My boyfriend usually makes hummus for us for the week, he just wings it and always does something different. This week we didn't have time to do it over the weekend but I had time to do some while he was working. I was stressed that it wouldn't turn out as good as his but I followed this recipe and it turned out so so good, topped it off with a bit of olive oil and paprika to dip pita in and it was great, my boyfriend even said "it's sooo good, I want more" after we finished our snack.
Can't wait to try these hummus recipes! What kind of crackers do you like for this? They look very healthy and good crackers are so hard to find as they all have bad oils in them.
Thanks,
Lynne
Classic is simply the best😋 Sometimes at least 😅
Seriously, this hummus is really fresh and works so well for an afternoon snack (fika!!). I added a 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin for default servings, which pop up the lemon and garlic flavours. I love PUL’s hummus and I crave for more 🤣😉
