Ingredients

Marinated tofu

  • 18 oz (500 g)
    firm tofu, pressed
  • 2
    garlic cloves, crushed
  • ¼ cup (60 mL)
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    freshly grated ginger (optional)
  • 1 tsp (5 mL)
    toasted sesame oil

Rice

  • 1½ cups (300 g)
    uncooked white rice

Sesame crust

  • ½ cup (64 g)
    cornstarch
  • ⅛ tsp
    salt
  • ⅛ tsp
    ground black pepper
  • ⅓ cup (80 mL)
    unsweetened soy milk
  • ½ cup (40 g)
    panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup (36 g)
    toasted black sesame seeds
  • ½ cup (120 mL)
    vegetable oil, for frying

Sweet & sticky sauce

  • ½
    lime, juiced
  • ¼ cup (60 mL)
    cold water
  • ¼ cup (60 mL)
  • 1 Tbsp (14 g)
    light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp (3 g)
    cornstarch
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    freshly grated ginger
  • 2
    garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tsp (5 mL)
    toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp (5 mL)
    chili oil (optional)

Serve with

  • ¼
small red onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • ¼ cup (4 g)
    fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • ½
    cucumber, sliced (optional)

Directions

  1. Cut the tofu into 1 inch (2 cm) slices.
  2. Combine the remaining marinated tofu ingredients in a shallow bowl. Add the tofu slices and marinate for at least 30 minutes, flipping occasionally.
  3. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the package directions.
  4. Get the coating station ready. On one plate, combine the cornstarch, salt and pepper. On a second plate, add the milk. On the third plate, combine the panko and sesame seeds. Set aside.
  5. Add all the sauce ingredients to a saucepan. Whisk until the cornstarch is well dissolved, then bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 5 minutes to thicken, stirring often. Set aside.
  6. Once the tofu is marinated, coat the tofu slices first in the cornstarch mixture.
  7. Then, dip briefly in the milk.
  8. Finally, coat in the panko and sesame mix.
  9. Heat up the oil in a large pan on medium-high. When hot, add the tofu slices.
  10. Fry until crisp and golden on each side. Transfer to a wire rack.
  11. Slice the tofu into strips, then drizzle the sauce over the tofu. Garnish as desired and serve with warm rice. Enjoy!

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, though do note the coating will lose its crunch.

Really tasty!

Aileen - March 12, 2025, 6:37 a.m.

So delicious! I swapped the cucumber for sautéed broccoli. I also added the little bit of leftover garlic from the tofu marinade to it.

Zachary Zervas - March 9, 2025, 11:49 p.m.

Came out so good, I'm new to cooking with Tofu and love this recipe!!!

Jennifer Mendez - March 7, 2025, 3:47 a.m.

Fantastic! Best tofu I have ever tasted.

Alexis O - March 5, 2025, 3:39 p.m.

Love this. It is beautiful and delicious. Even easier to make when preparing the tofu in the air fryer (400 degrees F for 11 minutes worked for us).

G - Feb. 27, 2025, 3:36 a.m.

Hi, This was really good! The alternatives I used was oat flour instead of cornstarch. Instead of cooking in oil on the stove I baked them for 30 minutes at 475, flipping halfway.

Best tofu recipe ever! This is freaking insane. It is so good. You have to try this out.

Tracy Regan - Feb. 25, 2025, 5:14 a.m.

WOW! This is the best tofu I’ve ever had! The crunchy texture on the outside and super flavorful sauce made this absolutely delicious! I am not even vegetarian and I would choose this over meat any day!

Gosh this is such a big compliment, Tracy! We're thrilled to hear that the sesame crusted tofu recipe was enjoyed 💛

Tiana Bogaert - Feb. 20, 2025, 12:10 a.m.

Super tasty! I used everything bagel seasoning with the panko and cooked it in the air fryer. It was scrumptious! I’ll definitely be making this again.

Michelle - Jan. 28, 2025, 12:55 a.m.

This was incredible. I loved the flavors and textures!

Shen - Jan. 14, 2025, 2:52 p.m.

That was so delicious! I used furikake seasoning as I did not have plain sesame seeds and I used the air fryer and it was divine!

Ooo thanks for sharing your experience with the crusted tofu recipe, Shen!

Absolutely delicious!! Crunchy and full of flavour!! I made this for my lunches at work ( but tried some before and it’s so good!!). Worth every minute!

Chris - Jan. 6, 2025, 12:35 a.m.

This is sooo good! My husband made this for dinner last night and we just had the leftovers tonight. It was just as delicious and crispy the second night! (He reheated the tofu in the oven and warmed the rice in microwave.) I’m debating whether this should be in regular rotation or saved for special occasions.

Riikka - Dec. 21, 2024, 7:44 a.m.

Lots of steps with the coating of tofu but definitely worth it. Would make it on a weekend with more time to focus on cooking. My kids loved it also!

Elizabeth - Dec. 11, 2024, 2:58 a.m.

So crispy and yummy! We ate the five servings between the two of us and our toddler who loved it! It was too good! The sauce was delicious. Definitely recommend serving it with cucumber- it gave it sushi vibes. The estimated time is spot on. It took exactly one hour.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Dec. 11, 2024, 3:25 a.m.

Woop woop! Love to hear this, Elizabeth, thanks a bunch 🤗✨

sophie - Nov. 24, 2024, 10:32 p.m.

It’s really delicious and crunchy! I had to use flour instead of cornstarch and it worked surprisingly well!
I wouldn’t recommend this though if you don’t like to do a lot of dishes :D

Freyha - Nov. 24, 2024, 7:11 p.m.

Absolutely great!

Melusine Parenteau - Nov. 22, 2024, 8:28 p.m.

The best crispy tofu I've ever made! This is the way 👌 thanks you !

Yuliia Soloviova - Nov. 20, 2024, 12:44 a.m.

I do not have enough words to express how my family and I enjoyed this meal! Thank you!

Dominika - Nov. 18, 2024, 7:05 p.m.

One of my best receipts from today 🫠. I’ll start making it on regular basis

Michelle - Nov. 17, 2024, 10:34 p.m.

Would it work to bake the tofu instead?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 18, 2024, 12:02 a.m.

Hi Michelle, we haven't tested this version of the tofu baked so we can't say for certain, but imagine you can bake it. If I had to guess, I'd say preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) without the fan on (just top and bottom heating), place the coated tofu on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spray generously with cooking oil, then bake for about 25ish minutes - flipping halfway through - but keep an eye on it, it'll be done when golden and crispy. Let us know how it goes if you try it out!

Mika - Nov. 23, 2024, 5:02 p.m.

Any suggestions for air fryer?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 23, 2024, 6:19 p.m.

Hi Mika! Similarly, we haven't tried, but perhaps you could preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F), spray the tofu with oil, and airfry for 10 - 12 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy and golden. Let us know if you test it out!

Caterina - Nov. 30, 2024, 10:10 a.m.

Hello! I have just tried the oven version and it worked! I set the oven at 220C (unfortunately I only have fan assisted oven) sprayed with oil and then baked for 30 mins, flipping once halfway through! 😌

Michelle - Dec. 5, 2024, 11:47 p.m.

I tried the baked version and it worked out really well. It was probably a bit drier than it would have been fried, but I still found it delicious!

Amanda - Nov. 17, 2024, 5:55 p.m.

Very easy to make and tasted like it came from a restaurant. Loved it!

Laura - Nov. 16, 2024, 8:16 p.m.

Very delicious and refreshing tofu-recipe!! I had to add just a little bit more of sugar to balance out the lime, it’s super easy in the making and may I say that your steps and time limits are always on point 😃 no rushing, smooth process 😮‍💨

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 17, 2024, 12:25 a.m.

Thank you so much, Laura, this made us smile! So happy to hear the steps felt smooth and stress-free as well 🥰

Thelma - Nov. 14, 2024, 7:06 p.m.

This looks amazing! Going to definitely try it. I'm not vegan but at some point, you just feel you've had too much meat and dishes like this are a refreshing change. Thank you :)

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 14, 2024, 8:52 p.m.

We hope you love the sesame-crusted tofu recipe, Thelma!
